Sonic Design:Weekly Learning

WEEK1-WEEK14

Week 1

At the beginning of the course, Mr. Razif outlined the learning blueprint for the entire semester in sonic design. The core tasks were clearly divided into four progressive stages: from understanding sound fundamentals, to creating auditory images, then producing audio narratives via audiobooks, and finally culminating in dubbing a silent film and compiling an e-portfolio. The most memorable part was the initial "sound meditation" session—when those seemingly ordinary daily sounds reverberated in the quiet classroom, they ceased to be background noise and instead became keys unlocking floodgates of memory. This direct sensory experience revealed the emotional and narrative potential of sound more vividly than any theoretical explanation could. The teacher also previewed subsequent assignments like animation and game dubbing, building our anticipation for the learning journey ahead.

Week 2

In week two, we moved from theoretical understanding to practical operation. Under the teacher's guidance, we got our first hands-on experience with professional audio editing software, manipulating key parameters like EQ, reverb, and delay. Hearing how the same dry recording could be transformed—becoming fuller, more spatial, or futuristic—through simple adjustments was a highly enlightening process. The several immediate, small exercises in class, though basic, effectively helped us connect abstract parameters with concrete auditory perceptions.

At first, I ran into a lot of challenges. For instance, my headphones had such poor sound quality that it was hard to discern subtle differences between audio tracks. Plus, I often overdid adjustments and struggled to find the right balance. But after the teacher lent me his headphones, everything became much clearer. I immediately decided to buy a new pair. With the teacher's guidance, I finally grasped some techniques to make slightly more accurate audio adjustments. Though I still find it incredibly challenging, especially distinguishing subtle differences between sounds, I'll keep practicing and working hard.

These is my Week 1 exercise.
