Advanced Modeling and Animation Assignment 1: Create Models for an Interactive Space

Design and Concept

I started by looking at some images for inspiration, gradually establishing the general look I wanted for the two models and creating a mood board for them.

Mood Board

Then I conceptualized the specific forms and content of the two models.

My idea is to create a mechanical octopus-themed VR attraction called Kraken Core and a drop tower ride styled like a spacecraft launcher named Vector Ascension. Then I sketched them in Procreate to facilitate subsequent 3D modeling.

Kraken Core:

Its head is a massive holographic projection that moves in sync with the storyline—rising, falling, rotating, and vibrating. Unlike traditional rides offering only a single sensory experience, Kraken Core combines multiple senses to deliver a truly profound immersive VR experience.

Vector Ascension:

Vector Ascension is a lift-and-spin ride I designed inspired by spacecraft launchers, much like a traditional drop tower. Yet it offers a richer experience than conventional drop towers, with its lighting, music, lift amplitude, and spin speed perfectly synchronized. Riding it feels like enjoying an immersive musical, providing a sensory feast for both body and mind.

Blender:

The modeling process for Vector Ascension went relatively smoothly. I effectively applied what I learned in this semester's and last semester's modeling courses, completing the model in just two evenings using techniques like ring cutting and extrusion.

However, I realized there's a significant gap between the design sketch and the actual modeling. Many details I drew in the sketch were difficult to fully express with my current modeling skills, or the results weren't satisfactory. Therefore, I made some improvements to achieve a better final presentation.

Below are some process images I created for Vetor Ascension:

However, modeling the Kraken Core proved exceptionally challenging for me—its sheer number of surfaces was overwhelming. I initially tried modeling it in Blender, but the results were too ugly. So I switched to PlasticCity, which I had learned earlier and found more advantageous for surface modeling.

To achieve a look close to my design sketches, I repeatedly adjusted the curvature of the octopus head's surfaces and pushed/pulled the tentacle parts. It took me about a week to complete. Seeing the final product gave me a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

Through this modeling assignment, I realized my modeling skills have significant room for improvement. I've decided to dedicate my free time to practicing modeling.

After completing the modeling, I unfolded their UVs, grouped components with identical materials, and exported them as FBX files to prepare for material work in UE.

Unreal Engine:

After importing the files into UE, I assigned materials to my two objects as originally designed. I gave the Kraken Core a smooth metallic material to match its mechanical octopus concept. For the Vector Ascension, I applied a more matte white material to make it look like a genuine spacecraft launcher.

Moreover, for the decorative light strip on the bottom of the seat ball, I opted for an extremely vibrant fluorescent green to better align with the cyberpunk aesthetic.

Advanced Modeling and Animation Assignment 2: Animate Models & Create Interactive Shaders

Design and Concept

This assignment requires us to add motion effects to the two entertainment facilities we previously created.I got them moving in UE just as I had designed them before.

I made the head rotate clockwise, while the outer ring surrounding the seat rotated clockwise and moved vertically. This ensures their motion effects align with the functional design I originally intended for them, delivering a vivid and immersive entertainment experience.
