Sptail Design II

Final Project: Creative Installation Lab- Experiential Retail Design

  From Anxiety to Immersion

When I first received this "multi-sensory retail space" assignment, I stared blankly at my sketchpad for three days—paralyzed by the challenge of breaking traditional store formats while seamlessly blending technology with humanistic warmth. Everything changed when I watched a documentary on Malaysian rainforests in the library. The scene of "cocoa beans fermenting in humus soil" struck me like lightning, and the phrase "Let the land's warmth reach the heart through touch and scent" became the master key unlocking my entire design logic.

The modeling phase was a painful metamorphosis:

In Blender, I revised the suspended cocoa pod lighting system 17 times just to perfect the three modes: heartbeat pulse/ember glow/constellation shimmer.
To replicate rainforest texture, I tested 23 flooring materials at construction markets, finally laminating 3mm elastic resin over sand-colored floors to achieve that "sinking feeling of stepping on rainforest loam".
The breaking point? Interaction logic. When my professor questioned if "bio-acousticscapes could truly enhance flavor perception," I composed soundscapes overnight: pairing 85% dark chocolate with 300Hz forest drones, and mango white chocolate with crystalline harp arpeggios. Hearing my classmate exclaim "Chocolate really has a sound!" during blind testing made me tear up in the lab.

Core Concept for Beryl's Terra

Centered on "the awakening of cocoa’s soul," the space guides visitors through an immersive journey from rainforest to palate across six zones:

Discovery Zone

"The Soul of the Bean Awakens: The Secret Language of the Earth"

  - Smelling area glass tube modeling device (metal pump head releases real fermentation odor)
  - Producer map wall with handmade clay reliefs + projections
Echoing the concept:
"Let the temperature of the land reach the heart through touch and smell ".

Rejecting wordiness - conveying reality through pictorial narratives

2. Tasting Ritual Platform
- Symphonic Chocolate Disc: Place 85% dark chocolate on the ceramic plate to trigger 300Hz pine forest drones and sugar-crackle soundscapes from base speakers.
- Plantable Story Cards: Take home basil-seed-embedded paper cards; scan QR codes to revisit your personalized tasting soundscape.

 Artisan Sanctum: Alchemy of Time

"Witness magic flow from master hands—your choices shape the creation"
▸ Visualized craftsmanship · Audience decisions manifest in physical form
Core Experience
An intimate theater for observing Beryl’s resident chocolate artists handcraft edible sculptures. Visitors engage in live co-creation where Malaysian heritage ingredients become artistic mediums.
Immersive Design

- Visual Focus: Central illuminated workbench with tempered glass surfaces revealing every detail:
  - Precision tools dancing over chocolate canvases
  - Temperature-controlled marble slabs maintaining perfect viscosity
  - Heritage ingredients displayed like pigments: gula melaka crystals, durian powder, pandan
 extract

Tasting Ritual: Poetry on the Palate
"Every bean a living story, every bite an echo of terroir"
▸Sustainable storytelling · Provenance transformed into emotional ceremony

Core Experience:
Guiding focused appreciation of Beryl's complex flavor profiles through professional tasting methodology.

Ambiance Architecture:
- Visual:Deep matte walls absorb light, while adjustable LED spotlights shift color temperature (3000K for dark chocolate, 4000K for fruited white)
- Auditory:Cocoa Loop bases emit ultra-subtle, flavor-matched soundscapes (e.g., resonant cello drones for 85% dark, crystalline harp arpeggios for mango white)

"Flavor Voyage" Smart Tasting Set:
Each guest receives a slate tray with 3 Signature Chocolates
- Single-origin dark (Sarawak 72%)
- Gula Melaka milk chocolate
- Durian-infused white chocolate

⚡ NFC-Embedded Discs activating Cocoa Loop when placed

Cocoa Loop Ritual:

1、Intelligent Recognition
   - Disc contact triggers printed plantable storycard (embedded with basil seeds)
   - Content:Origin map, bean varietal, fermentation method, flavor notes
2、Symphonic Pairing
   - Base speakers play custom soundscapes:
     - Dark chocolate:Forest floor cello with rain percussion
     - Gula Melaka:Palm sugar caramelization crackles
     - Durian white:Tropical fruit vibraphone melodies
3、Luminous Interaction
   - Touch the suspended cocoa pod orb to cycle light modes:
     - Pulse:Synchronized with heartbeat (focused tasting)
     - Ember:Warm diffusion (relaxed enjoyment)
     - Constellation:Slow shimmer (contemplative phase)

Sales Area:

"Memory encapsulation: continuation of the story "
Design strategy:
  - Merchandise shelves curved like a river(echoing Sarawak's rainforest waterways)
  - Digital scent postcard encapsulated in a cocoa shell(scratch and sniff to awaken memories)
Echoing the concept:  "What you take away is not a product, but a shareable sensory memory "
Emotionalizing the retail experience -physical carriers carry digital stories
